Garry the Groundhog is a story book character that was created by Rob Vogel, a board member and owner of Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, Indiana. He created a mascot type character that is done in story book format, video and as seen above, live costume to help kids deal with death. Stop in and ask about Garry at your next visit to Merrillville.
During a thunder and lightening storm last year, a tree at the west end of the office was damaged and had to be removed. Calumet Park had a local chain-saw sculptor put his creative touch to the remaining trunk as seen in the two photos above. The next time you drive by the cemetery office heading west on 73rd, you will see Garry peeking out at you over the shrubs. This program of appearances by Garry the Groundhog has been enjoyed by kids as they visit the cemetery or funeral home during community events such as October 12’s hayride and pumpkin painting program held annually. On Memorial Weekend, Garry helped some local boy scouts as they placed flags on the graves of veterans.
