598 requests were made for butterflies this year. 600 were ordered and 660 were delivered. And all were passed out at Saturday’s Butterfly Release Program at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, Indiana at the corner of Taft and 73rd. Paul Vogel II opened the event with a prayer and short homily that saw many people nodding their approval with hands raised to heaven. Brant Vogel played a special song that reminds him of his days as a youth fishing with his Grandpa. After this gentle piece of music, Stephanie Szymanski invited the wee ones up as she read a story that was written by Leslie Vogel shortly before her passing this past year. All guests of the day’s events were given a copy of the kids story, “Camo Cousins”, and Stephanie did a very nice job with her reading. Next, Rob Vogel read the “Legend of the Butterfly”, his 7th reading of this quaint tale of whispering a wish to a butterfly, releasing it, and trusting that it will carry your message to heaven where it will be answered because of your kindness in setting your butterfly free. Paul invited all who were not too exhausted from the very strong heat of mid-day to surround the butterfly garden, and on a countdown from 10-1, everyone would release their butterflies laden with their hopes and wishes. There were a lot of ooh’s and aah’s as he called out “one” and all 600 butterflies found their wings.
Thank you for all the staff for making this year’s butterfly release our best yet, and thank you to all who shared the day. Without you, there would be no butterfly program.
