Calumet Park Cemetery on November 11th at 10:00.
Pat O’Donnell will be the keynote speaker. Pat is as pro-veteran as you are going to find and he eagerly looks forward to helping Calumet Park honor all of our veterans. Calumet Park Cemetery has always had a huge Memorial Day ceremony and now, for the first time, is starting a new tradition of honoring veterans on their own day.
New veterans are created every day as uniforms are put away and men and women rejoin the ranks of civilian life. Too often they go unnoticed and the Board of Directors of Calumet Park determined that they need to be recognized for their service to the country. Although the weather is unpredictable in November, what is predictable is the need for this country to show greater appreciation for the sacrifices our men and women in uniform and their families have made, all in the name of freedom.
Patrick O’Donnell served in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade from 1967-1968 as an infantry man. Patrick, is a past Commander of American Legion Post 168, member of the Disabled American Veterans Group Chapter 17, Vietnam Veterans Chapter IL 0311 and Past American Legion District Vice Commander.
Pat presently serves as the Public Relations Liaison for the 1st District American Legion, member of Northwest Indiana Veterans Action Council and is an anchor host on WJOB Veterans Views Radio Program.
Please join with us on this special day. Since this is our first November outdoor event, we have no idea of what the turnout might be so bring a chair and join us in this wonderful tribute to all veterans. It is the least we can do to give up one of our 8760 hours to show our appreciation for those who will stand among you as proud veterans. This is a chance to let the living know that they are appreciated. Honoring the dead is important, and honoring those who were willing to give their life for your peace and freedom is the least we can all do. Let them know that you care.
If you have any questions, call 219-769-8803 and ask for Dan. See you there.
Tied into this special day will be a short ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the Veteran’s Memorial Columbarium shown below. A columbarium is a niche bank that is meant to be a final resting place for those who choose cremation and want to be in the veteran section. John Rassbach will do the honors of cutting the ribbon for this beautiful addition to Calumet Park Cemetery’s ongoing efforts to show honor and respect to all of our veterans.
John is a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a crew chief of a B-58 (Hustler) aircraft from 1964-68. To John, every day is veterans day. He is a member of the Department of Defense’s U.S. Army Reserve Funeral Honors Guard and his group recently won an Honors Ribbon for performing over 100 funeral honors in 2013.
